Rural Microenterprise Transformation Project (RMTP)

Value Chain Development Activities:

The RMTP project is providing financial and technical assistance, access to safe inputs and services, technology transfer, mechanization of farms and processing plants, production of processed goods, certification of products, and marketing of agricultural, fisheries and livestock products.

Establishment of demonstration plots for  production of high yielding varieties of mustard:

Establishing demonstration plots for high-yielding varieties of mustard involves selecting specific farm areas to showcase best practices in mustard cultivation, highlighting advanced varieties known for higher productivity, disease resistance, and better adaptability. The purpose is to demonstrate improved agricultural techniques—such as optimal planting times, spacing, fertilization, and pest control—to increase mustard yield. These plots help educate farmers on effective methods and provide a visual comparison to traditional practices, encouraging adoption of high-yielding mustard varieties to enhance overall production and sustainability in the region.

Perilla Oil Seed Crop:

Perilla is an oilseed crop from the mint family, known for its small, nutrient-rich seeds, which yield a high-quality oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds. Primarily cultivated in East Asia and parts of South Asia, perilla thrives in well-drained soils and moderate climates. The oil extracted from perilla seeds has various uses, including cooking, cosmetics, and traditional medicine. With its unique nutty flavor, perilla oil is valued both for culinary uses and for its health-promoting properties.

Vermicompost production plant:

A vermicompost production plant is a facility where organic waste is converted into nutrient-rich compost through the process of vermicomposting, which utilizes earthworms—typically species like Eisenia fetida (red wigglers). The worms digest the organic material, producing castings that enhance soil fertility and improve plant health. This compost is highly valued for its rich microbial activity, essential nutrients, and eco-friendly production. Vermicompost plants serve both environmental and economic purposes by recycling organic waste, reducing landfill use, and producing a natural fertilizer that supports sustainable agriculture.

Product launching programe:

Project success:

  • There has been increased interest among farmers in producing high yielding varieties of mustard.
  • Cultivation of high yielding varieties of mustard has increased the production and income of the farmers as compared to earlier.
  • Oil producers are producing and marketing oil using modern cold oil press machines and the demand for oil is increasing day by day.

Challenges:

  • Reluctance to adopt new varieties of oilseed crops.
  • Lack of awareness on use of organic fertilizers and organic pesticides.
  • Lack of knowledge on safe mustard production.
  • Farmers depend on local non-tech persons/shops for technical support.
  • Lack of manpower to carry out the project successfully.
